What Is a Herniated Disc?

Sometimes referred to as a bulging disc, a herniated disc is a common back injury. The spine is made up of several individual bones called vertebrae. In between each bone is a tiny disc-shaped cushioning pad that is filled with a gel-like substance. These discs help to absorb impact as a person bends and moves. Sometimes, through injury or age, the disc deteriorates or ruptures, causing the cushioning gel to escape. When this happens, the disc is said to be herniated, resulting in a bulging disc injury.

Herniated Disc Symptoms

Most often a herniated disc results in pain at the site of the disc herniation. This can be mild and aching, or severe and stabbing depending on the severity of the rupture. Numbness and tingling are usually associated with a bulging disc. If the herniated disc is in the upper back or neck, tingling may be felt in the neck, shoulders, arms, and hands. If the herniated disc is in the lower back, numbness, and tingling may be felt in the buttocks, legs, and feet. Often, people suffering from this injury report feeling more clumsy than usual, finding that they trip more often.

How Our Chiropractor Can Help

Luckily, there is an alternative to invasive surgery when it comes to treating a bulging disc.  Chiropractic care is an excellent way to reduce and heal herniated disc symptoms. Our chiropractor restores balance to the body by putting the musculoskeletal system in alignment. This is accomplished through a variety of techniques including manual adjustments, medical massage, heat therapy, and stretching and strengthening exercises. Depending on the severity of your bulging disc, our chiropractor may rely on one treatment option or a combination of several. Before beginning treatment, our chiropractor will assess your spine before creating a chiropractic care plan tailored to your needs.
