Sciatica

Sciatica Overview

Sciatica is a nerve pain caused by an injury or irritation of the sciatic nerve - the nerve formed by the nerve roots that come out of the spinal cord into the lower back. The pain can affect the hip, back, or outer part of the leg. Sometimes, such movements as getting up of a chair can make the pain worse.  The sciatic condition can be caused by spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome, a slipped or herniated disk (the most common reason), tumors, or injuries.

.

This health condition is characterized by the following symptoms:

  • Deliberating lower back pain
  • Nerve tingling, needles or pins down one leg.
  • The pain is limited to one side of the body.
  • Burning sensation in the affected area.
  • Weakness in the affected leg.

If the sciatica is mild, then it may go away over some time. However, if it is not going away, your doctor can recommend the following treatment options:

  • Cold.  Wrap an ice pack in a towel and apply it to the affected area for no longer than 20 minutes. You can repeat this procedure several times a day. This treatment method will help reduce sciatic nerve pain and inflammation.
  • Hot. After using ice packs for a few days, you can switch to heat. The heat will encourage the blood flow to the affected area, which will increase the recovery process.
  • Stretching.  Gentle stretching will help you recover faster. However, in order to make sure that you are doing it right, it is better to hire a professional physical therapist or yoga instructor.
  • Medication. Such medications as ibuprofen and aspirin help reduce inflammation, pain, and swelling. However, it is important to talk to your doctor first before using them because they can cause complications, including ulcers and stomach bleeding.
  • Exercising.  Regular working out contributes to the recovery due to the release of endorphins that are considered pain relievers produced by the body.
  • Physical therapy. It does not only reduce the pain and inflammation but also strengthens the back muscles and improves the posture.
  • Surgery. If the pain is too severe or if you have lost control of your bladder or bowel, surgery may be needed.

How a Chiropractor Can Help?

Chiropractic care has proven to be effective in treating the sciatic condition by helping the body to heal itself. Since it is a non-invasive treatment option that does not require the use of any medications, it is an optimal choice for many patients. A chiropractor may recommend several chiropractic methods, including spinal adjustments, ice or cold therapy, ultrasound, and others.
